Hester (b. 1964) was born and raised in Bogotá, Colombia. Currently she resides and works in Miami, Florida. For the past 10 years Hester’s work has focused on abstract photography of urban landscapes.
In 1989 Hester graduated from Parsons School of Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Environmental Design. Soon after she worked in Mexico with architect Enrique Norten of TEN ARCHITECTS. Alongside Norten Hester’s interest in architecture intensified and influenced her photographic practice. Over the course of her career, Hester has captured monumental buildings and city highway paths, probing the limits of photographs as architectural elements. Her urban photographs are interjections, they open space through tunnel views or compartmentalize it through images of massive columns, for example. Though Hester is well known for her explorations regarding relationships between photography and livable space, she is also considered one of the most remarkable fashion photographers in the history of Colombian photography.
From 1991 to 2001, Hester worked her own commercial photography studio in Bogotá. She designed and created sets for fashion editorials on couture fashion and celebrity portraits. Hester’s fashion photographs were frequently published in diverse editorials of the country and international publications as well. Eventually Colombia’s political instability prompted her to close the studio and move to Florida, where she began to study digital Photography at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. After mastering digital equipment and editing programs, Hester graduated with a degree in Photography from the Art Institute in 2003, almost 15 years ago.
Based in Florida, Hester’s primary focus is conceptual photography, although she continues her successful career as a photographer for high-end fashion catalogs and celebrity portraiture. She also produces work for renown architectural editorials, including Florida Design’s Miami Home & Décor and South Florida’s Luxe Interiors and Design. Her work has been exhibited at Caridi Gallery, Mark K. Wheeler Gallery, and O. Ascanio Gallery in Wynwood. Recently her artwork was featured in Art Wynwood (2013) and Pinta Miami (2014) art fairs.
Hester is a member of The President’s Ambassador’s Council of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. She is current Parsons Miami Alumni Chapter Chair, and is a docent at the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). Hester is currently represented by O. Ascanio Gallery in Miami, FL.
